no place for a snowplow

One of the less attractive sights to see on the railtrail in Andover is this rusting snowplow sitting just outside a sandpit in what appears to have been a cornfield. Either way, its no place for a snowplow. Every time I walk by I say I'm gonna take a photo some day and today I did.
Someday I'd love to hear a reasonable explanation for why we love pictures of broken down and discarded things...especially cars and trucks. I submit that we love derelict trucks and tractors and abandoned barns and decaying signs because on some subconscious level they remind us that we are human and even our inventions cannot live forever...though I'm sure the snowplow looks a lot better than I would had I been lying in that field since Reagan ran the show.

Speak To Me

Some of our backyard sunflowers are, in fact, lunatics.

Kearsarge Cougars 40, Bow Falcons 13

Friday night football games are one of the highlights of the fall season for me. Last night Kearsarge played Bow at KRHS and picked up the win, 40-13.
...lots of great action in the rain, good sportsmanship all around.
Bow didn't have their greatest night ever, but they made Kearsarge earn the win.
In the photo, DJ Hodgdon looks for room to run but Bow's Justin Hodgkins is there to make the tackle. Both played well for their respective teams.

Acadia National Park-Bar Harbor, Maine

So we've been away for a long weekend. We decided we could stand another vacation-ette and went to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine. Acadia is one of my favorites among the National Parks and although its kinda spendy (thanks, Oregon), we like Bar Harbor a lot, if for nothing else but sight-seeing. We took a lot of photos with our trusty Canon PowerShot A720 IS (whew). I shot the photos you see here except the rock wall that looks like another Old Man of the Mountain...Jess noticed that one. Speaking of Jess, there are a couple photos of her too, cuz she always makes a nice subject. Yup, I take a lot of macro shots too. You might say I'm not focused on the big picture. Thats how I roll, deal with it.  Enjoy the photos. We enjoyed our time at Acadia and in Bar Harbor.

KRHS XCountry meet

Its high school sports time again. This shot is among the first batch of photos I'm contributing to LakeSunapeeChampion.com , soon to be the go-to place for high school sports coverage for the Kearsarge/Sunapee/Newport/Claremont, NH areas.

Potter Place depot at night.

Its nice having something close by to photograph in a variety of light. The depot near our home just looks pretty in evening light. I shot this in RAW and converted the white balance to "cloudy", which it was, and that in turn just slammed the color balance over to the blue/red. It didn't hurt that it was shot on a tripod and metered for the sky. I used Potatochop (where the heck did I hear that?) to bring up a bit of shadow detail and sharpened the whole scene a bit...very little. The color balance was pushed to blue/red by 20 in either direction. I don't ordinarily like to use that much software futzing around but the sky looked so nice I had to.

Sunflower

Among many, many other things we've (OK, Jess, has) grown in our (her) garden this year, the sunflowers are blooming and look really, really cool. Some, like the one you can kinda see off to the left, are sorta drooping. Its been a bit dry here lately. I've got my eyes open for a shot with potentially four large suns in it. Sunflowers are one of those photographic opportunities that's hard to screw up, especially in evening light.
